Promoting Sustainable Integrated Farming

Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the LANN+ approach. Agriculture and nutrition have a close relationship however it is often significantly disconnected, and only considered agriculture’s role in just providing calories, income, and economic growth. Food is a key input for nutrition however food availability is not sufficient for ensuring adequate nutrition. Maintaining minimum dietary diversity plays a key role in achieving adequate nutrition. Hence, the LANN+ promotes the diversification of agricultural production systems both crop and smallscale animal husbandry, such as homestead gardening. Further, the LANN+ promotes a sustainable integrated farming system (SIFS) for a safe and nutritionsensitive healthy food production system because a healthy system is necessary for producing nutritious food for healthy diets.

The LANN+ adopted the participatory learning and action (PLA) approach. The PLA sessions on Sustainable Integrated Farming Systems (SIFS) covers a variety of topics in conservation and sustainable use of resources such as soil, water, and biodiversity. It promotes agricultural practices such as local crop biodiversity conservation and promotion, climateresilient agricultural technologies such as seeds and practices- greenhouse tunnel, promoting local seed systems and technologies for improving quality and timely access of planting materials, water sources conservation, and adopting technologies such as grey water management, conservation pond, organic manuring of soil, bio-pesticide, integrated pest management, etc.
