Nutrition education essential in improving nutrition status.
The crux of the LANN approach is learning and action. Nutrition education is essential in improving nutrition status. It tries to identify the gaps in food consumption, diet composition, and feeding practices and builds learning materials and nutrition messages, and communicates through PLA sessions. It focuses on increasing family food and nutrient intake with a focus on diversity, stresses the importance of safe and clean drinking water, and sanitation, and adopts hygienic behavior which is equally important in achieving advancement in nutrition security.
The LANN+ PLA sessions focus on the different nutritional needs of toddlers, and pregnant and lactating women as they are the key target group. Special attention is given to the first 1000 days of a child’s life since it provides an important window to prevent physical and mental damage. Further, it aims to overcome the food taboos and social norms that limit women’s access to nutritious food. Hence the LANN+ PLA sessions include topics on identifying and analyzing context and problems, causes, locating resources, and taking collective actions for addressing them. In addition, the school is another key entry point for nutrition education. Along with regular curricula, nutrition-related topics can be integrated through extracurricular activities such as speech, essay writing, drawing, etc.
