WASH play a vital role in improving nutritional outcomes.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) play a vital role in improving nutritional outcomes. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 50% of malnutrition is associated with repeated diarrhea or intestinal worm infections because of unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, or insufficient hygiene [WHO, 2008]. In addition, the lack of sufficient safe water sources close to home has many indirect effects on nutrition. For example, the time wasted in collecting water or illness due to water-related diseases reduces the caring capacity of mothers and negatively affects the child’s health. In the long run, it can prevent children from getting a quality education, and hence significantly affects their health, well-being, and economic situation.
Therefore, LANN+ has integrated WASH as the fifth key component in achieving nutrition security. It includes general household WASH interventions by targeting WASH activities, especially for toddlers, and addresses caregiver hygiene behaviors. It includes safe treatment and storage of drinking water and promotes correct hand washing as well as the use of hygienic latrines. The topics are included in the LANN+ manual.
